Vernon and District Metis Association Update

Hello Everyone 🙂

My name is Vincent Van Wieringen and I am the current President for the association. I have received the contact information for the over 400 card holding citizens here in Vernon and area from MNBC and bout 150 of you have emails. Instead of doing call outs I am sending an email with a quite update of what has happened over the last two years, up coming events, Website address and facebook information.

In the last two years we have established a great office within the people place which we have secured monies to pay the rent and incidentals through proposal writing and execution. Thanks to the help of many community members, board of directors and MNBC we have been able to run almost $100,000 of youth, women’s group and elders programming. The association has been able to get lacrosse equipment to play through the summer, Archery equipment, 22 pairs of snow shoes and lots of camping equipment through proposal writing. As I said, this is just a quick run down but feel free to go on our facebook page where everything is posted. From our monthly meeting minutes, agenda’s, upcoming events and much much more information.

Below are some upcoming events which are posted on our website and Facebook page.

***Roots Celebration***
This years Roots Celebration will be held out at Pillar lake in Falkland again this year on June 13th -June 15th. The VDMA will be providing Archery lessons for the youth and driving boats for the youth to fish this wonderful lake. Last year was an incredible 3 day’s with so many events for the youth to participate in. We hope to see everyone there.
***Lumby Day’s Parade***
The VDMA will be participating for the third year in a row at the Lumby Day’s Parade June 13th- 15th. We have had such great responses from the community members and everyone that participates or watches the parade that the VDMA has added this to our annual things to do. It is so nice to see how many people recognize metis culture and enjoy being part of a strong Metis Nation 🙂 We will be looking for people to fill the float, carry the flags and hand out things to the youth watching the parade. If you would like to participate please contact us.
***Annual VDMA Potluck BBQ***
One of the greatest events we here in the VDMA comunnity get to has is our yearly Potluck BBQ August 16th from 10am-5pm. It is a time for all of us to get together, bring our favorite dish and show our Metis Pride. We have loonie auctions with amazing gifts to raise funds for the following year, Burgers and Hot dogs provided by the VDMA, Kids pool for them to stay cool (and adults lol), music, dancing and this year we have Lacrosse equipment to keep our community active. This event is held at Coldstream Park, just beside Coldstream elementary school and is fun for all ages and any peoples who wish to join. We are always looking for organizers so if you wish to help please contact us via email of a phone call. Any ideas are welcome to make this the best day of the year 🙂
***Rememberance Day Celebrations***
Every year The VDMA lays a wreath on behalf of the Association and on behalf of our Veterans at Kal Tire Place, and in the Lumby Celebrations Nov 11th 2015. Thanks to Our Region 3 Veteran Eldon Clairmont for laying last years wreath on behalf of the association for our veterans, Shaughn Daveron Region 3 youth rep & Randy Spinks for laying the Associations wreath at Kal Tire Place, and a thank you to Anne and Don Mcbeth for laying a wreath on behalf of the association at the Lumby celebrations. We look forward to another wonderful remembrance day with our communities. We also need to send a thank you to MNBC for providing funding for the wreaths.
***Louis Riel Day Celebration***
On November 16th we are able to celebrate one of the most important people in Metis history. Louis Riel fought for his people and nation no matter what the consequence, beside some of the greatest Metis people ever known. On this day we celebrate everything he did for us and we celebrate being Metis and being part of a great Metis Nation. Something Louis Riel gave his life for, and something we continue to fight for in honor of the metis people and nation. The VDMA will be putting on a slide show, having a potluck BBQ and having discussions about of culture, past and future. We hope to see everyone at the celebrations which will be held at our office building from 1pm-6pm
***VDMA Community Potluck Christmas Party***
The VDMA will be holding our Christmas party at our office building on Dec 13th from 4pm-9pm. Bring your favorite holiday dish to share with the community and enjoy some great entertainment, games, food and a loonie auction. There will be a surprise visit for the kids and youth of the community. Last year we had almost 100 people and this year we expect more. It is a great time to enjoy company and celebrate the holidays with a strong Metis Nation. We look forward to seeing everyone there and will be looking for volunteers to help with the planning of this wonderful day. If you would like to help out please contact us and let us know.
