Call-out for Communities to Host 2016/17 series of BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships & Athlete Development Camps

The 2016/17 Host Application Process has been launched for First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities, Friendship Centres, and Aboriginal organizations to apply to host event(s) within the 2016/17 series of BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps. Successful community hosts will be awarded a Hosting Grant to help offset the majority of the event operating costs. The Championships and Development Camps are to be held primarily in the Summer/Fall of 2016 in a variety of communities across British Columbia.

These events have been strategically established to support Aboriginal athlete development in sports featured in the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). With the 2017 NAIG approaching, the series of 2016/17 BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships & Camps will be a primary component of the Team BC Talent Identification and/or Selection Processes for athletes to represent Team BC at the Toronto 2017 NAIG. Information regarding the specific details of the Team BC Selection processes for each sport will be released in early 2016.

The Provincial Championships & Camps series are slated to include the following NAIG sports:

• Canoe/Kayak
• Golf
• Soccer
Athlete Camps:
• 3-D Archery
• Lacrosse
• Swimming
• Athletics (Track&Field)
• Rifle Shooting
• Volleyball
• Badminton
• Softball
• Wrestling
• Basketball
The BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps are an important component of the Partners Council’s Provincial Strategy for Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity. The events provide a unique opportunity for Aboriginal athletes and coaches from First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities and Friendship Centres throughout the province to gather and compete in events that promote sport excellence while celebrating cultural unity and pride.

Committed to establishing a consistent, comprehensive Aboriginal Team BC program that results in increased participation and better preparation, the Partners Council’s Team BC Work Group and Provincial Sport Committees maintain oversight of the Provincial Championships and Development Camps.

To apply to host an event, please refer to the Aboriginal Provincial Championships & Athlete Camps 2016/17 Host Application forms. All The deadline to submit applications had been extended and must be received before 4:00 pm (PST), Friday, January 22nd, 2016.
