The mission of the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I·SPARC) is to improve the health outcomes of Indigenous people across British Columbia by supporting and encouraging physically active communities. The programs delivered by the I·SPARC are designed to build capacity and increase access to sport, recreation and physical activity in First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities, Aboriginal Friendship Centres, schools and other delivery agencies throughout BC.
In fulfilling a responsibility to deliver programs that create opportunities for Indigenous athletes and coaches to compete in elite competition, I·SPARC is assembling core members of its Mission Staff that will support Team BC’s participation at the Halifax 2020 North American Indigenous Games (2020 NAIG) to be held July 12-18, 2020.
Assistant Chef de Mission – Team BC
Team BC, consisting of approximately 550 athletes, coaches and mission staff participating in a minimum of 13 different sports, will be led and managed by Team BC’s Chef de Mission (head of the delegation), two Assistant Chefs de Mission and Mission Staff, whose responsibilities are to ensure all operations, logistics, communications, special events, performance services (medicine and sport psychology), and sport technical aspects are in place for a successful Games experience. The Chef de Mission and Assistant Chefs de Mission also serve as BC’s liaisons to the NAIG Host Society and Team BC partners.
I·SPARC is seeking a candidate to fulfill one of two Assistant Chef de Mission roles. Reporting to the Chef de Mission and working closely with the Chefs and the Provincial Coordinator, Performance Sport, the primary role of the Assistant Chef de Mission is to support the planning and delivery of Team BC’s athlete and coach selection and preparation processes conducted in the summer of 2019 through to spring 2020, support the oversight of Team BC administration, operations and logistics, and the training and supervision of mission staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Advocating for and supporting the Team BC program, philosophy, goals and objectives;
- Lead or support the coordination and delivery of Team BC selection and preparation processes across the 13 sports
- Liaising with Provincial Sport Committees, Team BC coaches and managers
- Attending NAIG Mission Meeting(s)
- Ensuring operations, communications, special events, performance services and sport technical aspects are in place for successful Team BC program;
- Liaise with Provincial Sport Committees, Provincial Sport Organizations, coaches, and managers on logistics and technical matters
- Leading mission staff and other Team BC volunteers;
- Attend, as required, selection or training camps to meet the athletes, coaches, etc. and explain the roles of the Chef, Assistant Chef, and mission staff
- Organizing Team BC meetings with coaches, managers and mission staff
- Monitoring budgets
- Administering sport technical packages, athlete or team eligibility/selection appeals, conducting dispute resolutions according to the Team BC Code of Conduct processes
- Collect final reports from mission staff and with the Chefs, prepare a final report
- Other related duties as required
Competencies and Requirements
- Post-secondary degree/diploma with leadership experience as an athlete, coach, official, volunteer or sport administrator
- Experience in project management with a proven track record of delivering on objectives
- Strong understanding of the Indigenous and mainstream sport systems, sport technical knowledge, and multi-sport games environment
- Applied knowledge of BC’s Indigenous communities and their physical activity and health related needs
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Ability to manage a complex workload and work to tight deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain positive working relations
- Event management and financial management experience are assets
- Ability to work calmly under pressure in a stressful environment for extended period of time
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule and available to travel when required
- Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle
- Successful completion of criminal record and vulnerable sector checks
- Compliance with Team BC Code of Conduct
The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) currently serves as the official Host Agency of I·SPARC. Accordingly, the Team BC Operations Manager will be employed by the BCAAFC.
Term: Temporary full-time employment: July 2019 to August 28, 2020
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Location: Must be a BC resident. Candidate must have own office space and laptop.
